I-E. JASPER SIBERT (1827 – 1915), son of David Sibert2 (John David1)
Jasper Sibert was born on 10 November 1827, probably in St. Clair County, Alabama. [1][2] He died on 21 January 1915 in Craighead County, Arkansas. [1][2] He is buried in the Shilo Cemetery in Jonesboro in Craigshead County. [2] Jasper married first Rebecca Brown [1] on 16 November 1848 in Saint Clair County, Alabama. [3] Rebecca was born about 1829 in Alabama, and she died in 1891. Jasper of Lorado County, Arkansas, married second Nannie H. Farrar of Lorado County on 22 November 1891. [4] Nannie was born in February 1840 in Nebraska. She died on 23 February 1929 in Greene County, Arkansas. [1] It is said that Nannie was Mary H. ("Nannie") Tipton, who married first Reverend Nimrod William Farrar. [2] Nimrod was born on 25 June 1890 in Marchall County, Tennessee, and died on 31 January 1890 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. [2] He married first Demeris Yarborough on 15 November 1855 in Marshall County. [2]
Jasper and Rebecca are buried in the Shiloh Cemetery in Jonesboro. Jasper's gravestone says, "Rev Jasper Sibert / born Nov 10 1827 / died Jan 21 1915." Rebecca's says, "Rebecca / wife of / Rev. Jasper Sibert / died / Jan 4 1891." [2]
Accoding to the census in 1850 Jasper, aged 22, Rebecca B., aged 21, and David R., aged five months, were living in Division 25, DeKalb County, Alabama and Jasper was a farmer. Rebecca was said to be illiterate. Jasper owned two slaves. [5]
Jasper bought 40 acres in section 13 of Huntsville Township in St. Clair county on 15 November 1852. He bought 120 acres in sections 13 and 14 on 2 April 1857. [6]
In 1860, Jasper, aged 32, and Rebecca, aged 31, lived in St. Clair County with David R., aged ten; Albert H., aged eight; John W., aged four; Julian M., aged two; and Jasper H., aged ten months. Jasper was a farmer with a personal estate of 3,000 dollars and real estate worth 3,463 dollars. He owned two slaves. [5] Jasper's farm had 140 improved acres and 220 unimproved acres. He had a horse, a mule, four milch cows, two working oxen, two other cattle, and 14 swine. He grew corn and potatoes and produced butter. [7]
An act of 27 September 1862 made men between 18 and 45 eligible for the Confederate draft. For some reason exempt from frontline service, Jasper appears on a 25 July 1863 list of those drafted for the Home Guard of the 27th Militia Regiment, DeKalb County. [8]
Jasper was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Arkansas. He was ordained on 2 October 1870. [1][4]
In 1870 Jasper, aged 43, and Rebecca, aged 43, lived in Salem, Greene County, Arkansas with D.R., aged 20; A.H., aged 19; John W., aged 14; Julia A., aged 12; and James N., aged five. Jasper was a preacher and a farmer with real estate worth 1,000 dollars and a personal estate of 300 dollars. Rebecca was described as unable to read. D.R. and A. H. were farmers. [5]
In 1880 Jasper, aged 52, and Rebecca, aged 52, were living in Poland in Greene County with John, aged 25, and James, aged 14. Jasper was a minister. John was described as a farmer who was unable to read. James was a farmworker. [5] In 1900 Jasper, born in November 1827 in Alabama, and Nannie, born in February 1840 in Nebraska, were living in Powell, Craighead County. Jasper was a farmer. Nonnie had never had children. [5]
Jasper Sibert "being well advanced in age" made his will on 24 January 1901 in Herndon, Arkansas. After the usual preamble, he said: [9]
[A]fter the payment of all my just debts I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Hanna Sibert the home place on which we now reside with all appurtenances thereunto belonging all stock of every kind wagons farming tools &c which may be on the place at the time of my death to have and to hold during her natural life or widowhood and in case of her death or marriage all to revert to my estate and be equally divided among my children or their heirs. Second I will and bequeath to my beloved children Mary Faulkner James N. Sibert and to my beloved grand children sons and daughters of my beloved son David R. Sibert now deceased all my remaining real and personal estate to share equal and alike that is to say Mary Faulkner to take one third James N Sibert one third and the heirs of my beloved son David R Sibert one third and I have hereunto subscribed my name and call on J.H. Line and W.S. Lindley to witness the same.
The will was proved on 20 February 1915. [9]
Children of Jasper Sibert and Rebecca Brown:
I-E-1. David R. Sibert was born on 23 September 1849 in Alabama. He died in 1896. He married Mary Hicks.
I-E-2. Albert Henry Sibert was born on 22 September 1851. [1][2] He died on 10 November 1875 in Arkansas. He is buried in the Shilo Cemetery in Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas. [2]
Albert's gravestone says, "Albert H. / Son of / Rev J & R / Sibert / born / Sep 22 1857 / died / Nov 10 1875." [2]
In 1870 Albert was living with his parents in Salem and working as a farmer. [10]
I-E-3. William H. Sibert was born on 16 October 1853. [1] He died in 1854 in Arkansas. [1]
I-E-4. John W. Sibert was born on 1 February 1855. He died in 1900 in Arkansas. [1]
In 1880 John was living with his parents in Poland and working as a farmer. [11]I-E-5. Unity Harriet Catherine Sibert was born on 13 April 1856. [1] She died that year in Arkansas. [1]
I-E-6. Julia Marietta "Mary" Sibert was born on 16 October 1857 in Alabama. She died on 10 January 1934. She is buried in the Shilo Cemetery in Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas. She married Thomas Jefferson Faulkner.
I-E-7. Jasper Newton Sibert was born on 28 August 1859. [1] He died in 1860 in Arkansas. [1]
I-E-8. Rufus N. Sibert was born on 6 March 1861. [1] He died in 1864 in Arkansas. [1]
I-E-9. Josephus Sibert was born on 18 December 1862. [1] He died in 1864 in Arkansas. [1]
I-E-10. James "Jim" N. Sibert was born on 29 November 1864 in Alabama. He married Hattie N. Arledge.
